Moving In and Around Wortham

Wortham is at the junction of State Highway 14 and Farm Road 27, sixteen miles west of Fairfield in western Freestone County. It was renamed for Col. Rice Wortham, a merchant who helped bring the railroad through the area, and Wortham ISD runs the town schools. For other Freestone County moves, see our Fairfield movers, or our Mexia page if you are heading into Limestone County.

Wortham History, From the Railroad to the 1924 Oil Boom

Wortham’s story runs through the railroad. When the Houston and Texas Central Railway was planned through the area in 1871, the landowner sold the right of way for five dollars, and in 1874 the settlement, earlier known as Tehuacana and Long Bottom, took its current name. By 1885 it was a small market center for area cotton farmers. Then on November 27, 1924, the Roy Simmons No. 1 well came in as a gusher, more than 300 drilling rigs were in the field within three weeks, and the town was transformed overnight.

Wortham is also tied to blues history. Blind Lemon Jefferson was born on a farm in Couchman, near Wortham, and is buried in town; a Texas Historical Marker was dedicated at his grave in 1967, and in 2007 the cemetery was renamed Blind Lemon Memorial Cemetery. In 1997 the town began a blues festival named for him. Wortham ISD, with Wortham High School, serves local students.
