Moving In and Around Malakoff
Malakoff sits at the junction of State Highways 31 and 198, eight miles west of Athens in western Henderson County, which puts our Athens office close by. The town is known for the “Malakoff Man,” a prehistoric carved head found in a gravel pit in 1929. Local public schools fall under Malakoff ISD. For moves to or from the county seat, see our Athens movers.
Moving to Malakoff, One of Henderson County’s Oldest Towns
Malakoff’s settlement dates to the 1830s, which makes it one of the oldest towns in Henderson County. It began as Caney Creek, a settlement around a grist mill north of today’s town, was later known as Mitcham Chapel after a Methodist church organized in 1852, and took its current name from a Russian town that was in the news during the Crimean War. After the railroad came through the county in 1880, a new townsite was laid out closer to the tracks. Lignite mining made the area the county’s largest industry by the 1920s, and the town grew again once Cedar Creek Reservoir was built in the mid-1960s.
The lake is close by. A free Henderson County boat ramp sits about three miles north of town on FM 198, at the north end of the Caney Creek bridge, and the Fisherman’s Wharf marina is reached by FM 198 and FM 3062. The town’s state historical marker stands in Municipal Park on N. Terry Street. Malakoff ISD runs Malakoff Middle School and Malakoff High School, along with Tool Elementary. If your new home is off FM 198 or one of the farm roads toward the lake, share the access details when you request your quote.
