Living in Hillsboro, From the Courthouse Square to Lake Aquilla
Hillsboro sits where I-35 splits into I-35 East and I-35 West, a spot that has drawn antique shops and an outlet mall. The 1890 Hill County Courthouse, a limestone Second Empire building with a tall central clocktower, was restored and rededicated in 1999 after a fire, and in 1981 Hillsboro was one of the first towns in Texas chosen for the Texas Historical Commission Main Street Project. The downtown square still has its brick-lined streets and art festivals in Bond’s Alley, and the M-K-T Railroad Station is among the town’s historic sites.
Katy Lake and Lake Aquilla are both partly within the city limits, and city parks include Carter Davis Park, City Park, Sesquicentennial Park, Wallace Park with its nature trail butterfly garden, and a splash pad. Hill College is based at 112 Lamar Dr., and its history complex includes the Texas Heritage Museum. For water, wastewater and trash service, apply through City Utility Billing at the City Annex, 115 S. Church St., Suite B; see the city utilities page. Frontier Waste Solutions has handled residential trash and recycling since April 1, 2025.
