Kerens, a Railroad and Cotton Town in Eastern Navarro County

Kerens was founded in 1881, when the railroad built through the county, and was named for Judge R. C. Kerens of St. Louis. The railroad bypassed nearby Wadeville, and its businesses soon moved to the new town; one 1878 house was even moved from Wadeville to 200 S. Throckmorton Street in 1883. The railroad surveyed a 270-acre townsite, and several streets were named for railroad officials. A post office opened in 1882, and the town was incorporated in 1888.

Cotton built the town: the first gin went up in 1883, and Kerens gins produced 23,000 bales in 1933. The Kerens Cotton Harvest Festival, held on the third Saturday in October, raises money for the Kerens library. Kerens ISD, at 200 Bobcat Lane, offers online enrollment and registration, and from SH 31 you can head south on SH 309 toward the Richland-Chambers Reservoir boat ramps.
