Moving Into a New Build in Midlothian

Midlothian, known as the Cement Capital of Texas, sits on US-287 and US-67 in Ellis County. If you are moving into a newly built home, confirm your closing and move-in dates with your builder first, then book your move so the crew arrives when the house is ready. Check your HOA rules on moving trucks as well. If you are moving before a school year at Midlothian ISD, plan around the school calendar. New to town? The City of Midlothian website is the place to set up city services, and the Midlothian Chamber of Commerce is a good way to find local businesses and events.

Midlothian, From the Cement Plants to Mockingbird Nature Park

Midlothian sits close to the highest elevation in Ellis County, atop the Austin Escarpment chalk ridge, the formation that helped make it the Cement Capital of Texas after Texas Industries began building its first cement plant here in 1959. The name was reportedly suggested by a Scottish train engineer; the Santa Fe Depot was dedicated on May 10, 1883, the day the railroad sold lots in town, and Midlothian incorporated in April 1888. From the mid-1970s, newcomers from Dallas and Fort Worth built homes on farmland outside town, and a 600-acre Auto Park sits along the US 67 corridor north of downtown.

The city has 15 parks, including the 62-acre Mockingbird Nature Park with a hiking trail, butterfly gardens and a pond, and Kimmel Park, home to the historical marker for the old Polytechnic Academy. Yearly events include the Midlothian Independence Day Parade, Downtown Trick Or Treat and the Midlothian Christmas Celebration. Midlothian ISD runs two high schools, Midlothian High School and Midlothian Heritage High School. To start water and sewer, complete the city Water/Sewer Application and pay the application fee and deposit (see Establishing Services); Waste Connections handles garbage and recycling.
