Kaufman calls itself the oldest continuously inhabited community in the Three Forks of the Trinity River area. It began as King’s Fort, established in 1840 by William P. King and 40 pioneers from Holly Springs, Mississippi; as Kingsboro it became the county seat and was renamed for the county. Since 1851 the town square, with the courthouse at its center, has been the focus of local life, while the county’s main courthouse today is the Kaufman County Justice Center on US 175.

The city has more than 622 acres of parks and lakes, including the 232-acre Kaufman City Lake Park off Highway 34, the Kaufman Sports Complex with a 7/8-mile concrete walking trail, Shannon Park in the northwest part of town and the 19-acre Prairie Creek Open Area for hiking. Yearly events include the Independence Parade up S. Washington Street on July 4, Kaufman Harvest Fest in October and Christmas on the Square in December.
