Moving In and Around Whitney
Whitney sits at the intersection of State Highway 22 and Farm Roads 933 and 1244 in western Hill County, two miles southeast of Lake Whitney and twelve miles southwest of Hillsboro. It is named for Charles A. Whitney, a principal stockholder in the railroad, and its students attend Whitney ISD. Moving to a place near Lake Whitney or off one of the farm roads? Share the access details with your quote request so we can plan the right truck and crew. For moves to the county seat, see our Hillsboro movers.
Life Near Lake Whitney, the Getaway Capital of Texas
Whitney was established in 1876, when the Houston and Texas Central Railroad built a line through Hill County. Its biggest change came with the lake: the reservoir project began in 1946, Highway 22 was moved over the new dam and opened in 1951, and the town built a tourist trade around Lake Whitney, which the Lake Whitney Chamber of Commerce still calls the Getaway Capital of Texas.
The Whitney Lake dam and powerhouse, run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the Brazos River, are about 5.5 miles southwest of town, and Lake Whitney State Park at 433 FM 1244 sits on the 23,500-acre lake, with a youth fishing tournament on the first Saturday in June. Whitney ISD’s offices are at 305 S. San Jacinto. If your new place is a lake house or a home off FM 933 or FM 1244, tell us about the drive and any slopes when you request a quote so we can plan the truck and crew.
