Fairfield, the Freestone County Seat on I-45
The original 100-acre townsite was donated by David Hall Love, and Fairfield kept the county seat in elections against Wortham in 1891 and Teague in 1918. Fairfield Female College held its first session in 1859, the Recorder newspaper was first published in 1876, and the town got water and sewer lines in 1933 and a public library in 1954. Fairfield never had a railroad; the Trinity and Brazos Valley line bypassed it by ten miles in 1906.
The Freestone County Courthouse is at 118 East Commerce Street, and the Freestone County Historical Museum at 302 E. Main St. occupies the 1881 county jail, which local residents bought in 1966 and restored to its 1880s look. Fairfield Lake is on Big Brown Creek about eight miles northeast of town. Fairfield Lake State Park has closed, and a private developer bought the land with plans for an upscale subdivision.
