Groesbeck: County Seat Life Near Old Fort Parker

The Houston and Texas Central Railway reached Groesbeck in 1870, and in 1874 the town replaced Springfield as the Limestone County seat. About three miles north on SH 14, Old Fort Parker, a replica of the Parker family fort from the 1830s, has been run by the City of Groesbeck since 1992 and hosts events such as a pre-1840 mountain man rendezvous and Civil War reenactments. The town is also home to the Maffett Memorial Library and The Groesbeck Journal.

The City of Groesbeck describes its park system as well known; it includes a Little League complex, a 1.3-mile walk and bike trail, a 9-hole disc golf course and a summer public pool. If you are starting or transferring water service, plan ahead: an occupancy inspection must be approved by Code Enforcement first, the application needs a picture ID (renters also need a lease or signed rental agreement), and for same-day connection the account must be completed before 4:30 p.m. with an adult on site. See the city customer service page. Groesbeck ISD’s offices are at 1202 N. Ellis.
