Moving In and Around Kemp

Kemp sits near Cedar Creek Reservoir, eight miles southeast of Kaufman in southeastern Kaufman County, on Highway 175 and State Highway 274. The town is named for Malvina Kemp Watkins and is home to Kemp ISD. If you are moving to or from a property near the reservoir or off SH 274, describe the driveway and road when you request your quote so we can size the truck and crew correctly. Moving somewhere else around the lake? See our pages for Mabank and Seven Points.

Moving to Kemp, a Trade Town by Cedar Creek Lake

Kemp was officially established when its post office opened in 1851, and the Kemp Academy of Learning followed in 1867. The rail line and a depot arrived in the mid-1880s, and Kemp grew as the trade center for the lower part of Kaufman County. Its citizens voted to drop incorporation in 1910 and reincorporated in 1922, and Cedar Creek Reservoir was completed just south of town in 1965.

Kemp City Park, bounded by 9th, 10th, Commerce and Main streets, holds the town’s state historical marker. Along with US 175 and SH 274, Kemp is served by FM 1895 and FM 1391, and Texas 274 runs south from town toward Seven Points and the lake marinas. When you book, tell us whether your new place is in town or out toward the lake so we can plan the route and the truck.
