Getting Settled in Athens, From the Square to the Arboretum

Downtown Athens is built around the courthouse square. The Henderson County Courthouse, a Classical Revival building with a central dome accepted by the county in January 1914, still anchors it, and the square has hosted the Old Fiddlers contest and other events over the years. Before there was a courthouse at all, the first court sessions met under a large oak on the square. The city also counts the Cain Center, the Henderson County Regional Fair Park Complex and the historic Texan Theater among its family destinations.

Families who move here have plenty of green space close to home: Cain Park covers 85 acres of sports fields and open space, Coleman Park is the main athletic complex, and the East Texas Arboretum on Patterson Road offers 104 acres of trails and gardens. At the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center on FM 2495, visitors can borrow tackle and bait for the day. New water customers apply in person at the Utility Billing counter at City Hall, 508 East Tyler Street, with a photo ID and proof of residence, and you can set up Republic Services garbage and recycling at the same time.
